Do you want to be happy again? Well, why can’t you?
In today’s blog post we’re going to be looking at how to bring happiness back into your life. Let me start by telling you about one of my clients. Many years ago, she had come to me, asking how she could get her happiness back. Before, she had a lot more happiness, but she was also making less money. Now, she had created more success in her life, but something was missing.
She explained it like this:
Prior to my current career, I had a lot of freedom and was doing things that I loved. I was open to finding new hobbies, being creative, and doing all these artsy things. The only thing was that I was making just enough money to survive. I decided that I wanted to make more money and started buying into all these different things (like training, classes, etc.) that were supposed to help me create more financial success. I ended up becoming more successful, but at the same time, I was becoming busier because the financial story that I bought into required me to make certain sacrifices. I began to give up all these things I used to do that made me happy for the sake of my work. I gave up traveling. I gave up a lot of my hobbies. My creativity started to disappear and finally, my freedom.
I woke up one day and realized I had achieved financial success, but it was by someone else’s standards. I was no longer as happy as I used to be because I had convinced myself that money and happiness couldn’t go together. I had to sacrifice everything to create a life of achievement.
When we met and started working together, I had to help her change her belief so that happiness and financial success were no longer linked together. We started talking about making bigger and better choices, and how to use our financial success to bolster her happiness. But that first required her to reconnect to what happiness truly meant in her life. In the beginning, this client just went with the flow and never took the time to understand what made her happy because she had so much more on her plate. She had to sit down and really be intentional about what happiness truly meant for her.
We have all been going through some really interesting times over the past year or so, and humanity has been struggling with giving up happiness for the sake of survival. Now we’re at a place where we’re finally starting to move away from that struggle and find happiness again.
So how can we be happy again?
First, we need to be like my client and revisit how we define happiness. We also have to make sure that we take the necessary steps to let go of the stories that attach money with happiness. This isn’t to say that money can’t help us get to happiness. Rather it just means that money isn’t necessary to create the happiness we want in our lives; money just makes things happen faster.
Secondly, you need to make sure you haven’t bought into stories that attach happiness to responsibilities, forcing you to choose between the two. Some of those responsibilities include making money, spending time with family, being a good friend, being a good significant other, etc. Just like how we have to get to the root of our bad money stories, we have to get to the core of why we attach certain levels of responsibility to our happiness by being a brother, sister, son, uncle, whatever. When it comes to relationships, we want to get to the bottom of what it truly means to be a significant other for this person that we love and care about, and why we believe we need to sacrifice our happiness for the sake of a relationship. If you think about it, it’s counterintuitive because when we find ourselves needing to sacrifice our happiness for the sake of our relationship, it goes against the whole point of being in a relationship, which revolves around happiness being at the core of everything.
I understand there are some situations where responsibility takes precedence, such as the responsibility of a parent to their child; however, we need to make sure we separate necessary responsibility from what we need for ourselves. Call it “parent time” or “me time,” but this is important for creating a new level of happiness that is sustainable and more resilient.
