So I call this program “happy snacks” because I hope it brings you a little more happiness every week. This brings me to this week’s topic: how you view happiness creates your happiness. Think about this: how we choose to perceive things that happen around us dictates how we move through this world. No two humans will view life the same way; they might be similar, but your experiences and worldview are uniquely your own. When we first came into this world, we viewed things very objectively. Think about a child: they’re in awe of everything and they’re constantly asking, “What’s that? What does this do?” As we get older though, we start to apply filters in how we navigate through life and interpret things.

Today I want to focus on taking these learned filters off and be willing to look at things objectively again, but with an adult mind. As a baby, we can’t discern what works and doesn’t work for us, but when we’re adults, we have perspective. We can choose a perception that tells us, “No, I’m not happy.” Similarly, this idea is also how two people can view the same thing but have different reactions. It all comes down to how we interpret and perceive things.

We experience this all the time and yet, we don’t realize just how powerful it is when we are able to take ownership of the choices of perception. How we choose to view happiness or how we choose to understand and define what happiness is, is literally how we put the filters on in our world to ultimately create happiness for ourselves. When someone says, “I am not happy” they actually need to choose to be in an empowered state and understand the concept: start by telling yourself that you’re choosing and making decisions that are ultimately creating the state of unhappiness.

If you have a clear definition of happiness, then that means that you can make choices to create a happy life. How we choose to filter the stuff that’s happening around us in our life and in our world is what’s going to ultimately determine whether or not we have a happy life.

Is this easy to do? No. The concept is simple though.

Choose a perception and interpretation of things.

Those who deem themselves unsuccessful are because they’re comparing themselves to others and choosing a particular perception or interpretation of unsuccessfulness. Some of the most impoverished countries in the world actually have some of the happiest people. The USA is one of the most prosperous countries in the world, yet we fail to rank anywhere near the top ten happiest countries in the world. Why is that? Because Americans have bought into a narrative that financial wealth and success equals happiness and success usually means a capitalistic endeavor or gain. This is why understanding your filters are so important. Think of a photographer: the photo will look different depending on what filter you use.

You need to choose happiness. I’m not saying this is an easy process because it’s not, but it is simple to say, “I’m going to start taking ownership of all my undesirable states of existence and I’m the master of the choices that I make.” A lot of times when people are choosing to be unhappy it’s because they believe they don’t deserve to be happy or there’s some part of them that thinks they have to achieve a certain type of existence before they can be happy. So the unhappiness isn’t caused by politics or some socio-economic issue, but rather your interpretation and perception. Happy people in the world are the ones who have their perception and interpretation in check and know that they can always challenge how they’re choosing to see and interpret things to get a more desirable result. The first place you should always look is within you and what filters you have on and how you’re viewing things in life that is ultimately leading you to that undesirable state of existence.

This is probably one of the most powerful Happy Snacks at Noon we’ve done.
