A friend recently told me that he’s the brokest he’s ever been in his life.
My response?
“Congratulations!”
Every time I congratulate someone on being broke, that look at me like I have two heads. In their mind, it’s terrible. But to me, it’s exciting. It’s exciting because being broke is an obvious symptom of money anxiety, something I know is possible to overcome. I’ve personally overcome money anxiety and I’ve helped me clients overcome it as well.
And being broke is a great starting point for overcoming money anxiety.
When you’re broke, you are in the final stage of money anxiety. Once you’re there, it’s easier to deconstruct what got you there and re-engineer your money story.
There is a pattern
There is always a pattern. Most likely, this is not your first time going broke.
It’s probably a pattern that’s been haunting you your entire adult life. The pattern consists of actions or thoughts that ultimately lead to your own demise. And it’s this pattern that keeps resetting your bank balance to $0.
I’ve been there before. I’ve had money and gone broke. Then I’ve made more money and gone broke again. The cool thing about the pattern is that you can’t get any broker than broke; there is no such thing as brokest. Once you’re broke, the only other direction to take is one towards prosperity.
So if you’re broke, I say congratulations! Because this is your best opportunity to work backwards, figure out the behavioral patterns that got you here, and overhaul them completely.
What you need to do
- Identify the last time in your life when you were as broke as you are now.
- Map out the events that brought you from then until now, and put them in chronological order.
- Now identify an even earlier time in your life when you were as broke as you are now.
- Map out the events that brought you from that point until the point you identified in #1.
- Identify your pattern.
Once you identify your pattern you will have to take conscious action to break free of your pattern. You are likely to reveal that money anxiety is the core of it when you break down your thoughts and actions.
