Welcome to another Happy Snack at Noon, the 6 Figure Academy’s weekly live “snacks” where we talk about money flow, mindset optimization, or more importantly, life mastery around happiness.

You might have noticed that we’ve been talking about happiness more: happiness and money, happiness and anxiety, etc. This is because we’ve been noticing that more of our clients are realizing that happiness is so much more important than money. The funny thing is, when we’re happier, we actually make more money. So in today’s Happy Snacks at Noon, we’re going to be looking at how to go from unhappy to happy.

This is definitely a challenge right now, especially because a lot of people are struggling with happiness given what’s been going on in the world this past year. I’m going to break down a few fundamentals that will help us understand unhappiness and why we sometimes get stuck in an unhappiness funk.

First off, a very important concept:

Being in a state of unhappiness can NOT exist without the state of happiness, and vice versa.

This concept is similar to yin and yang; or the idea that “if the sun doesn’t set, then we’ll never know what it means to be night.” We talk to a lot of students and clients about embracing the states of unhappiness, and we work through how move through and embrace this state. This is important because when we embrace unhappiness, we start to recognize and validate the reason for its existence. Embracing unhappiness gives you a chance to unpack mentally: What are you unhappy about? Why am I feeling unhappy about [insert situation]? Once you start to recognize and embrace the state of unhappiness and stop blaming situations and circumstances for it, then you start to bring back the power to be able to change your state of unhappiness to a state of happiness.

If we are in a state of victimhood or blame and denial, then we are blaming circumstances and derivatives of unhappiness, such as anger, sadness, fear, etc. So how do we go from unhappy to happy? WE EMBRACE THE STATE OF UNHAPPINESS.

Now a problem that sometimes occurs is that people will identify why they’re in a state of unhappiness, but then they won’t know how to determine what their happiness is. Remember, happiness and unhappiness need to exist together. You can’t have one without the other. So what can you do? One of the easiest ways to do this is to brainstorm what your happiness would look like. A lot of clients will say, “I just want to be happier!” which is a nebulous statement. Let’s say you’re unhappy with your current financial situation. What is it about your financial situation that you’re unhappy about? What would you need to change for you to feel happier financially? The more specific you are, the better!

An example:

  • What are you specifically unhappy about financially? I can’t pay my bills.
  • What can you do to pay your bills and be happier? I need to make two, three times more than what I’m currently making.

When you start to break things down like that, it starts to open up your awareness to opportunities to become happier.

So first, you need to embrace the state of unhappiness. This will allow you to unpack what is actually making you unhappy and help you unlearn toxic behaviors. Then you can start to shift directions and define what kind of happiness state you want to be in. The more you do this, the easier it will become. I like to call this your “happiness muscle.” It won’t be easy at first, but the more you “work out” this muscle and follow the same systematic approach, you will start to find that you get better at it.
