Money Stories from a Financial Advisor – Lumen Team

Dennis: My parents are immigrants to the United States and moved here when I was two years old.  They were very conservative and really never invested their money into stocks or bonds or anything of the like.  The only type of investing they were familiar with was just putting money into a savings account and owning a home.  Unfortunately, my dad at the age of 50 suffered a major stroke and was never able to recover.  He actually had to retire from work and gave the reigns of managing our family’s finances to my mother.  Two years later, I have vivid memories of us losing our home to foreclosure and scrambling to find a place to live.  I swore on that day that I would no longer be ignorant in my investment knowledge and that this would never ever happen to me.

Chris: For me, the family I grew up in remains an incredible example as to how we can use our money to benefit others by being smart, frugal, and having a giving mentality.  That resonates with my wife and I, and is our motivation.

Julia: My parents are also immigrants, as am I. We moved to the states from Russia when I was 13. In Russia, my dad had two jobs. Here, in the states, he worked 12-14 hour days to provide for us. It was ingrained in me from the beginning that you work hard and good things will come. My parents gave me a nickname of squirrel – because from babysitting and other early on jobs that I had – I always stashed some money aside (like nuts for the winter). It just always made sense to me you need to save for the future.
