When I was growing up, I wasn’t a fan of Monopoly
On the contrary, most entrepreneurs love Monopoly.
But I was just OK at it. Sometimes I won, sometimes I lost. It was inconsistent. I couldn’t figure out a way to be consistent about winning.
And I wanted to win all of the time.
So one day, I was at a house party and a cute girl asked me if I wanted to play Monopoly. I had a crush on her, so naturally I said “Sure!”, when in my mind I thought “Dammit, I hate that game!”
While she was gathering more people to play, I was freaking out! I thought to myself, “I don’t know if I can show up and play the game well enough to win. What am I going to do?”
And in that moment, I realized I had never read the instructions that come with the game.
I took that opportunity to briefly review the instructions on the back of the box. And I finally realized why I wasn’t consistently winning. I was instantly obsessed with figuring out how to improve my strategy and win more often.
Once we started playing, I ended up playing really, really well! And I know it’s because I took the time to read the instructions. The rules were fresh in my mind. I was actually helping other players understand the strategy and play a better game as well!
Once I understood the rules of the game, I was able to create consistent wins
I knew how I could win. And if I didn’t win, I knew why.
Fast forward to today. I realize that I learned a critical lesson that applies to entrepreneurship on a variety of different levels, especially around money.
If we’re going to “play the game” in the world that we live in, mastering and understanding the game is the key to better results. No matter what our purpose of being is, no matter what it is that we want to do on this planet.
Until you get intimate with the rules of the game, you aren’t going to get consistent results.
