What is this elusive breakthrough that everybody’s talking about?
What does it mean to have a breakthrough in regards to our money, life, and relationships? More importantly, why would you even want a breakthrough? In today’s blog post, we’re going to talk about what a breakthrough is and how it’s applicable to all areas of life. For many years, I labeled myself as a breakthrough coach or a performance breakthrough coach. Everything was about getting a breakthrough, and for a long time it worked, but now “breakthrough” has become a buzzword and its meaning has kind of gotten lost. At the 6 Figure Academy, we talk about breakthroughs in the realm of money and life empowerment, but now there are others who talk about breakthroughs in regards to relationships, their health and fitness, and their mindset. So what is this whole breakthrough thing all about?
First and foremost, let’s talk about why you need to know what a breakthrough is because this is an important piece in understanding if you’re having breakthroughs in life. If you can’t recognize what a breakthrough is, then that’s a problem because you’ll never know what you’re breaking through and you won’t grow from it.
Hey man, what’s up what? Dude, you can stand and walk now! You haven’t been able to stand and walk in years.
Oh yeah, I guess I am.
Oh my God. What did this happen?
I don’t know. I just woke up one day and here I am.
What are you going to see? Excited? What are you going to do? This is so cool. You haven’t been able to walk for years. Are you going to travel? You need to go live life! Wait, where are you going?
What? Oh, I’m going to go catch a new video that’s coming out on Netflix.
Wait, what? You haven’t been able to walk much less stand in years and you’re going to go…!
No, I’ve been waiting for the show to come out for a really long time and you know what? I got to go.
Wait, wait, what, what?
How many times have you seen that happen and not recognized the breakthrough that was actually happening?
Why Do You Want a Breakthrough?
The next question then is why do you even want a breakthrough? Simply put, a breakthrough is one of the biggest leaps of growth that you can experience. Most of us grow gradually and then what happens is that gradual growth starts to plateau. To get past that plateau is what we call a breakthrough. I remember when I was a personal trainer and my clients would get to a plateau point. As anyone who’s worked out knows, this is quite common. You’re not getting any stronger and you’re not improving on your times, reps, or strength. What is required in that moment is a shift to break through that proverbial glass ceiling so that you can start to grow again and reach new levels of excellence. Having a breakthrough allows you to actually take that big leap, which is what we call a breakthrough.
So what, specifically is a breakthrough? A breakthrough is that aha moment. Most of us have experienced it at least once or twice in our lifetime. It’s that moment where you have this clearing, like the angels have come out and all of a sudden the horns are playing and everything. Oftentimes we don’t recognize it because we’ve become a little jaded from a lack of having a sufficient amount of breakthroughs when we actually want them. Then when we actually have a breakthrough, it’s unexpected and we forget to recognize it’s there. We might actually be having breakthroughs, but we don’t even know how to recognize them. We end up squandering it and don’t capitalize on that breakthrough.
Now not all breakthroughs are aha moments. Sometimes a breakthrough is when you recognize that you actually need a breakthrough. Breakthroughs can be elusive and having that recognition is the precursor to actually having the main breakthrough. In other words, a breakthrough moment is recognizing that 1%. What I mean by 1% is that you have this one moment in life where you’re trying to have a breakthrough, but the other 99% of the time you’re running the opposite direction, away from the breakthrough moment. As a breakthrough coach, I tell people that I am that 1% moment. I help them break through that 1% moment where most of the time in their lives, they run the other way when they encounter it. I say, “We need to stop running away. When you’re ready, we’ll break through that 1%.” Once you break through that 1%, you’ll be taken to what I like to call the promised land, much like what happens when you break through your bad money stories. It actually opens up the keys to the kingdom of what’s possible for you as an entrepreneur in your business.
What A Breakthrough Is
Let’s dive in a little bit deeper on what a breakthrough actually is and how it can actually release the anchors and shackles that you’ve carried all your life. Sometimes it’s not literally breaking through something, it’s something that is breaking away. A breakthrough moment means you’ve let go of the anchors that have been holding you back and you’ve let go of the shackles that have been keeping you constricted in either your business or your life. That breakthrough moment is powerful. When it happens, you will literally feel the weight come off of you. So in a way we can call the breakthrough session a releasing of shackling anchors. This includes all behaviors, beliefs, and motions that no longer serve you in helping you get the things that you want to achieve in life. If you think about where people use the word “breakdown,” it’s simply in reference to the proverbial wall that a lot of people hold around us. We built that wall when we were younger to protect ourselves, but oftentimes we outgrow that wall and we forget to take it down. So a lot of times a breakthrough moment is breaking through the old walls that had protected us before, but no longer serves a purpose. To reiterate, a breakthrough moment could be an unshackling, but it could also be breaking through an old wall that used to protect you, but no longer does and has turned into a liability versus something that is supposed to help you.
Ways To Get That Breakthrough Moment
So how can you get that elusive breakthrough in life so that you can progress and grow from your current circumstances? I’m often reminded of the old scriptures that talk about courage and fear while walking up to a lion. One guy was so fearful of the creature, but when he finally built up the courage to walk up and face the lion, he realized it was not a lion, but a kitten. Then all of a sudden he had a breakthrough.
So one way you can get that breakthrough is to literally confront the fears and hesitation. Instead of running in the opposite direction, stay a little bit longer in that resistance and realize that what you feared is nothing to be feared at all.
Another way that you can have that breakthrough moment is by owning the resistance. In other words, you want to own the wall that you’ve built but now have to break down. A lot of times people will go through life and they’ll have these walls around them and not know how to take them down. Instead of confronting this wall and confronting yourself, you’ll have that 99% propensity to run away and go in the opposite direction.
So to have a breakthrough, you first need to understand why you want to have that breakthrough, why that resistance is there to begin with, and why it no longer serves a purpose. You literally have to own that wall that you created. In other words, take full responsibility to understand how to dismantle this wall you built. For example, let’s say you built a brick wall around yourself. You tell yourself, “Great, all I have to do is bring a sledgehammer and bring some water to break down the cement and maybe a few other things. Maybe a wrecking ball and a sledgehammer and chisel.” Then you get to the wall and realize this is not a brick wall, but a 10 foot deep steel wall. You think, “There’s no way I can break through with this with a sledgehammer and chisel and wrecking ball. Everything is just going to bounce right off. I actually need a torch and some explosives.” So people fail at having a breakthrough because they don’t take the time to look at and own what it is that they’re trying to breakthrough.
This is a big problem. People are being taught to break through things without being told that they have to first recognize what they’re trying to breakthrough. Yes, there are questions such as “What is it that you want to break through? What is it that you want to be?” Most of the time, though, there’s not enough time to truly understand and dive deep into your own resistance. Oftentimes we will be taught to blame others or blame circumstances so that we don’t have to fully take ownership, but the most profound breakthroughs happen when you actually take full ownership for turning and running away each time you were confronted by a block. If you don’t own up to and fully take responsibility of the resistance and the wall that’s there, then you’re more likely to have a breakdown and miss the breakthrough. Then we’ll go back to how things were before.
