Today we’re going to talk about anxiety and its effect on mental health. I’ve been doing a lot of work around this recently because more and more people are realizing that our mental health has a direct impact on our success and our happiness.
I was at the gym today and I couldn’t help but overhear some of the conversations that were happening. There was one guy talking about how some of his family members get panic attacks and the other guy said something about getting anxiety too. I was troubled by how it seemed like being anxious was a common, everyday thing, and I realized that I needed to address it because it can literally keep us from becoming happily successful. Yes, people can have anxiety but become financially successful, but imagine what happens when that anxiety never goes away.
So today, we’re going to learn how to understand and unpack our anxiety. So first, what is anxiety? Anxiety is one of the emotions that isn’t felt in the present; rather, anxiety is a future-based fear. Other emotions, such as anger, sadness, fear, hurt, guilt, happiness, joy, love, are all experienced in the present. Sure, you can feel these emotions when you think back on memories, but your unconscious mind needs to access that memory. People are living in the past, or they’re not being present because, in their mind, they’re literally not here.
Anxiety, on the other hand, is a fear of something that may happen or has yet to happen. An interesting thing when I work with clients is seeing them focus solely on this future-based fear in the present. It’s all they can focus on so how do you think this affects their success? Think about what happens when you’re putting all your energy into one possible outcome. If you know anything about goal setting, then you’ll know that in order for you to hit a goal, you need to put your energy into a possibility or vision to help you get there. When your mind is occupied by a future-based fear, then you’ll increase the probability of creating that circumstance. It’s almost as if you’re planning and setting a goal for that to happen. Unfortunately, the more we don’t address this anxiety, the more you’re going to continue manifesting it.
So first, you need to understand what anxiety is and how it works. Then you can start to unpack it by allowing yourself to re-introduce all the different possibilities and possible outcomes. This can include outcomes that do not introduce anxiety, meaning that you can choose a different path. Think of it as a choose-your-own-adventure and you now have the option of going on the path leading to happiness and success instead of fear and anxiety. I’ve used this strategy with my students and clients and we’ve always uncovered unique strategies to better deal with the anxiety.
