A shocking incident happened on April 11th. The world watched as 69 year old man was violently dragged from an airplane after he refused to give up his seat on the overbooked United Airlines flight. More baffling details emerged when it was revealed that he was brutally forced to vacate his seat to make room for an additional United Airlines employee. Upon refusing to give up his seat, an employee dragged the old man from the plane leading to severe injuries and hospitalization.
But let’s focus on the violent United employee for a minute
When I first saw that video, I was astounded. How could the employee think that this was the right decision?!
Putting aside the fact that in our day and age EVERYBODY is a walking camera and his actions would surely be captured and shared on social media.
Why did he think that a violent, physical extraction would be the best way to handle the sensitive situation?
Why do people defy logic?
This United employee certainly defied logic and social expectations of how one should behave. Let’s imagine that the employee believed that what he was doing was just, because on the fine print of the plane ticket it stated that no one’s seat is guaranteed. Actually, three other people on the plane complied to the request to vacate and left the plane. At this point the employee may be thinking to himself, why have three other people complied but one refused to cooperate? He is the authority. Everyone needs to comply to authority.
Now pay attention to this:
What if this incident triggered something in his mind? A story he learned possibly at a young age and since then stuck in his mind. This story says, “If you defy authority, you get in trouble.”
So imagine standing in the shoes of the employee. There is a non-compliant passenger who will not listen to an order. You start to get frustrated and your emotional baggage comes to the fore. The unconscious mind kicks your “authority story” into high gear and you start to behave independent of logic or social reason. At this point you decide to defend your authoritative status and drag the defiant person from the plane.
Now, this may not be the exact thought process that developed in the employee’s mind. But when people behave in a non-logical way, do you ever wonder: why they do it?
Because a story embedded in their subconscious is triggered.
When you don’t know how to act, the story takes over and runs its course.
How this relates to you
When does your money story kick in? Does it start up when you need to make an important sales or financial decision?
When that money story begins to play in your mind all social expectations, constructs and rules go out of the window! And only when the dust settles and the story has run its course do you realize that you have made a huge mistake, again.
It’s important to reflect on these stories, without reflection you will not be able to change them. I truly believe that we need to continually evolve and grow as a human beings. You need to holistically grow your mind, body and energy to grow as an entrepreneur. Because at the end of the day as an entrepreneur your business cannot grow unless you grow.
That is one of my biggest take-aways from the United Airlines incident. It reminds me that we need to get a handle on the stories that run in our mind.
In The 6 Figure Academy, we focus on your money story. The story that takes over when making a critical business and financial decision. You need to get it under control in order to reach the next level of financial success.
Now, sharing is caring. So please share this video with anyone who has been talking about the United Airlines story. Especially if they are an entrepreneur. Use this opportunity to bring this lesson to life: address your money story so that you can start to improve your financial circumstances.
